Why No Steering?

Why No Steering?

When we made MotoGP Championship Quest we wanted to make the game as “accessible” for everyone regardless of whether you are a hard core gamer or a casual player. Have you ever noticed in other motorcycle racing games the rider flapping from side to side as you struggle to keep the bike on the track? Unlike car racing games, when you make a turn on a motorcycle the bike leans from side to side an effect which is very obvious. When we bought our customers into the studio and asked them what they liked and hated about motorcycle racing games – they all said they struggled with the steering and that this really detracted from their level of enjoyment, so much so that they eventually abandoned the game as it was too hard to master. Games are about having fun and enjoyment – not frustration and exasperation. So we decided to focus on the two things that really, at the end of the day, make the most difference in the racing environment – braking into and accelerating out of corners. Ask any racer – they will tell you that this is the most important aspect of racing, hitting the right brake timing and being able to get as much power to the ground as you need getting out of the corner. It’s all about timing, bravery and taking calculated risk. If you miss being able to steer the bike, we’re sorry. However we are happy that at least you will be able to play this game with your friends who perhaps aren’t at it as you. If you have any feedback – please let me know. You can reach me at graeme@weplay.media

Why do you only Brake and Accelerate?

Why do you only Brake and Accelerate?

In case you didn’t read my post on “Why No Steering” then let me explain. When we design a game we bring our customers to the studio and we spend time getting to know them, what they like and what they don’t like. They told us loud and clear that steering was the number one thing they didn’t like – so we decided to focus on braking and accelerating as the timing of both of these is incredibly important to the success of a rider in a race. We found this quote in an interesting piece of research; we think this will help you understand why we focused on braking and accelerating as we have Among pilots and race engineers it is common opinion that the braking phase is the most critical and sensitive maneuver. The ability of a driver to achieve an ‘‘optimal braking’’ can make the difference on the lap-time. Even few milliseconds per braking hence can be crucial. In this work, optimality simply means minimum time to decelerate the motorbike from the initial speed to a target speed Source http://www.elsevierscitech.com/pdfs/CEP_Corno.pdf So when you see a MotoGP race and there are say 10 seconds separating the winner from the 3 rd place rider, think that all they had to do was drop ˝ a second per lap over 20 laps and suddenly they are 10 seconds behind. Losing half a second happens in the blink of an eye or the momentary squeeze of a brake a the wrong time. MotoGP is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing and the riders ability to accurately and bravely enter a corner hard under brakes is the thing that wins and loses the race. Now you know why we focus so much on braking and accelerating. If you have any feedback feel free to email me at graeme@weplay.media and thank you for playing our game.

Why do I start with a blank white bike?

Why do I start with a blank white bike?

Just like anyone coming into MotoGP as a rider you have to work you way up through the ranks. So we start you off with a blank white bike and then introduce you to sponsors who are interested in having you race a bike with their logo on it. Sponsorship is the commercial activity which enables motorsports (and any sport for that matter with the possible exception of Curling) to exist. So you will see that you quickly move from your blank white bike to a sponsored bike where that sponsor will pay you to race each week in valuable in game coins which you can spend on upgrades and other stuff. Of course if you want to bring the level of realism up a notch you can acquire a MotoGP team bike or better still support your favorite rider and race as him. When you race as your favorite rider you are directly and personally contributing to their success in the Fan World Championship.

What is the Fan World Championship (FWC)

What is the Fan World Championship (FWC)

The Fan World Championship is a real tournament, which runs over the course of a calendar year. Each week represents 1 round in the FWC. The FWC is all about the fans. Every player of MotoGP Championship Quest, who elects to race as his or her favorite rider, is automatically entered into the FWC. You do not have to do anything to enter other than purchase your favorite riders character. The FWC is not a popularity contest; if it were it is likely that Valentino Rossi would win every round such is his global appeal and the legacy of a 20 year career. Instead we focus on fan engagement so it is important you understand how it works. Lets say Valentino has 100,000 player racing as him – every race they complete during a week (round) contribute to Valentino’s total score for the week (round) If every player contributed an average of 500,000 points then the math would look like this 100,000 players x 50,000 points = 5 billion points Now lets say that Karel Abraham has 500 fans racing as him and each one contributed 65,000 points in a week (round) the math would look like this 500 players x 65000 points = 32.5 million points If the FWC was a popularity contest then Valentino would win, because it is not we make the following calculation to “level the playing field” and see whose fans as the most engaged Valentino 5 billion points divided by100,000 fans = 50,000 points per fan who raced Karel 32.5 million points divided by 500 players = 65,000 points per fan who raced So the winner of this challenge in the FWC would be Karel Abraham as his fans achieved the highest average score. So as you can see the actual riders occupy a position on the leaderboard based on their fans commitment to racing and contributing to their favorite riders over all score. It is not enough to be popular in the FWC – the riders must have the most engaged and active fans and that’s just the way they like it.
